IGNITE Event in Poland on Biotechnology and Human Genetics

On February 15, 2024, fifteen 6th and 7th-grade students, aged 11-12, from a public primary school in Warsaw participated in an IGNITE Event. The event featured Agnieszka Nadel, a PhD candidate at the Institute of Human Genetics, who shared her journey and expertise in biotechnology.

The students met Agnieszka Nadel, who shared her journey in the field of biotechnology. She started by sharing her passion for scientific subjects, especially biology and chemistry, though she admitted that physics wasn’t her favorite. In high school, Ms. Nadel dreamed of becoming a doctor to help people, but when she didn’t have enough points for medical school, she discovered molecular biology—a perfect blend of her interests in biology, chemistry, and the human body.

Nadel’s path took her through various internships in Macedonia and Germany, where she gained valuable experience in scientific research. Despite being hired as a scientist in Munich and starting a PhD, she realized she preferred hands-on lab work over computer tasks. After returning to Poland and working as a technician in Warsaw, she felt the need for another change and applied for a position at the Polish Institute of Science in Poznań. Now in her final year of her PhD, she focuses on heart tissue engineering.

Nadel’s story highlighted the importance of adaptability and perseverance. She shared how her plans evolved over time and how open communication with trusted individuals helped her navigate challenges. She emphasized the value of being honest with oneself and not being afraid to seek advice from mentors, family, and friends.

To wrap up the session, Nadel asked the students to list their achievements in various fields, such as school, home, relationships, and health. This activity aimed to boost self-appreciation and self-awareness. The students were highly engaged, asking numerous questions and eagerly participating in the discussion.

A big thank you to Agnieszka Nadel for sharing her inspiring story and insights. Special thanks to Educator Małgorzata Biszczuk for coordinating and encouraging the students, and a heartfelt thanks to Cathi Rodgveller for her constant support.
