On January 17, 2025, students from Muckleshoot Tribal School participated in an AI and Machine Learning (AI/ML) Work-Based Learning Experience (WBLE) with Afiniti, where they explored real-world applications of AI and engaged in interactive activities designed to demystify machine learning concepts. The event was facilitated by Wennahele Navarrete, with Kashaf Jamshed providing technical support. Students worked in small breakout groups led by Maham Rizvi, Sanjana Kalani, Tayyaba Ayub, and Abaq Asif, and later engaged in a panel discussion featuring Sanjana Kalani, Data Engineer, Tayyaba Ayub, Associate Director, and Abaq Asif, Manager, Client Data Services.
The session began with an introduction to AI and its impact across industries, followed by hands-on activities designed to showcase machine learning in action. Students participated in three AI-powered experiments that brought AI concepts to life. In “Rock, Paper, Scissors,” they competed against an AI bot, learning how algorithms recognize and predict patterns. In “Quick Draw,” they used an AI-powered drawing tool to understand image recognition and neural networks. In “Teachable Machines,” they trained their own models to classify objects, gaining insight into data collection and model development.
The panel discussion allowed students to hear firsthand experiences from professionals in the AI/ML field. Panelists shared insights on their roles, career paths, and the challenges they’ve faced, particularly as women in STEM. Students asked thoughtful questions, including what they liked about their jobs, where they would work if they weren’t in their current roles, and whether they had ever faced challenges as women in the workplace. Panelists emphasized the importance of perseverance, encouraging students to keep trying even when faced with setbacks. They reinforced that being the only woman in the room should never discourage them from pursuing their goals.
Educator Olivia Bentley noted that students were highly engaged, especially when Panelists shared their personal experiences and strategies for overcoming obstacles. The interactive nature of the activities helped students connect AI concepts to real-world applications, sparking curiosity about STEM careers. The event was a success, thanks to the thoughtful organization, engaging discussions, and inspiring insights from the Volunteers.
“This event inspired me to work harder and believe in myself. It inspired me to own myself and what I can do. My favorite thing was learning what it’s like to be a girl in different fields.”

“Today’s event inspired me to be more confident and not to be afraid of other’s opinions. It inspired me to keep being passionate about what I love doing. My favorite thing about today was learning everyone’s different perspectives and what they do within STEM.”

“It inspired me because I didn’t know how much women were involved in STEM. It’s inspiring to know that they worked hard to be a role model for younger women. My favorite thing was learning about a different field of work.”
10th Grade IGNITE Student
“It was interesting to learn about STEM and to see what it could do and learn. My favorite part was probably the AI bots–it was fun to learn about STEM!”
