On January 22, 2025, students from Yelm High School and Garfield High School visited the AWS Skills Center for an immersive Field Trip exploring technology, hands-on problem-solving, and career pathways in STEM.
The day began with an introduction to AWS and an overview of the Skills Center’s role in technology education. Students were then divided into two groups for interactive activities. One group participated in a computer hardware challenge, where they learned about key components such as the motherboard, RAM, CPU, and storage, then worked in teams to assemble computers in a friendly competition. The other group explored AWS services through hands-on stations covering Machine Learning, Space, Sports, Home, and Robotics, using technology to solve real-world problems in another engaging challenge. After the activities, the groups switched so that all students could experience both sessions.
During lunch, students had the opportunity to hear from a panel featuring professionals from AWS who shared their career journeys, insights, and advice. Panelists Anu Kaggadasapura Nagaraja, Erica Vismer, and Meghan Sullivan emphasized that a career in STEM doesn’t always start with a clear passion for tech but can evolve through exploration and persistence. The Panelists also reassured students that STEM is not just for “techies”—there are many different pathways into the field.
Students posed thoughtful questions, such as how much science is required for a STEM career, what internships are offered, and whether being a “techie” is necessary to work at AWS.
Panelists offered powerful advice, encouraging students to be themselves, ignore doubters, and trust their abilities as they navigate their education and career paths. Many students left the event with a new perspective on AWS, realizing that the company is much more than just an online retailer—it’s a leader in cutting-edge technology with a wide range of career opportunities.

“Today’s event inspired me by pushing me to pursue my dream career, giving me a sense of faith and courage because I know the path will be hard. My favorite thing that I learned today was hearing about women’s experiences in a field that isn’t popular for women and how to navigate the challenges of the work world as women.”
