On October 25, 2024, students from Mill Creek Middle School visited Rivian Technical Trades for an interactive Field Trip that combined STEM exploration with career inspiration. The event was organized by Tom Clarke, Nollan Worrell, and Natalie Flores, with support from Volunteers Cole Beyler, Nick Krader, Chris Placencia, Halonna Gilbert, and Perrin Rich-Martinez. Students enjoyed lunch provided by Laura Choy and heard from a panel of Rivian professionals: Daesha Campos, Service Operations Leader; Elyse Rebelo, Sr. Manager, Field Service Engineering; Samantha Carroll, Industrial Designer; and Liz Cercado, Senior Manager, Mechanical Service Engineering.
The day featured three engaging activities where students rotated in small groups to explore Rivian’s technology. In the first activity, students embarked on a scavenger hunt inside an R1S vehicle, identifying various features and components. Next, they worked hands-on to build small electromagnetic motors during a drive unit build. Finally, they calculated the voltage of a high-voltage battery pack, gaining insights into Rivian’s cutting-edge engineering.
The panel discussion offered a highlight of the day, as students asked questions about the Panelists’ career journeys, middle school experiences, and their roles at Rivian. Panelists encouraged students to follow their passions, work hard, and pursue dreams despite adversity. They also shared candid insights about working in a male-dominated industry, inspiring the students with examples of how women are breaking barriers in STEM fields. The event left students energized about the possibilities in automotive and engineering careers, with many now curious about Rivian’s programs at Renton Technical College.
“I saw many perspectives and heard people’s stories, which showed me that no matter what, you can create something for your future. I liked learning about the cars—they looked very cool, and I hope to drive one one day.”
