On November 15, 2024, 10 students from grades 6–8 at Muckleshoot Tribal School participated in an engaging IGNITE Panel organized by Educator Olivia Bentley. The event showcased the importance of women in STEM and provided students with the opportunity to interact with inspiring professionals from various fields.
The panel discussion was led by Laura Bartenhagen, Director of Engineering at ESM Consulting Engineers, LLC, and included Panelists Pat Velasquez, Software Developer at Seattle Children’s Hospital; Fawn Sanchez, Project Manager at Tribal Tech LLC; and Kathy Brusted, Director at Microsoft.
Students were actively engaged, asking thoughtful questions such as how to keep up with changes in technology, what a typical day looks like, and what the hardest parts of their jobs are. They also inquired about how to access scholarships and financial aid, as well as how the Panelists handled situations where they were treated differently because of their gender or heritage.
The Panelists shared meaningful advice, emphasizing that STEM is accessible to everyone, regardless of initial strengths in areas like math, and encouraged students to keep their options open. They discussed the variety of STEM careers available, the importance of women entering these fields, and strategies for navigating challenges, including being the only woman in the room. Panelists highlighted the value of perseverance through hardships, noting that staying determined can lead to rewarding careers in STEM.
Students appreciated the honesty and relatability of the Panelists’ stories. The use of small gifts helped encourage engagement, and pre-prepared questions ensured meaningful conversations. The event was a powerful opportunity for students to envision their potential in STEM careers, and the school looks forward to hosting future IGNITE Events to continue inspiring their students.
