On January 31, 2025, students from Muckleshoot Tribal School participated in an interactive IGNITE Workshop with Microsoft, focused on developing non-technical interview skills for careers in technology. The session was led by Liz Bander, Senior Program Manager, who facilitated discussions and activities alongside Kobe Norcross, Software Engineer, Hillary Lundberg, Microsoft Early in Profession Recruiter, and Annie Almanzor, Senior Category Manager & Supply Chain Execution Manager. Educators Olivia Bentley and Akemi Boyd provided key support in making this opportunity possible.
The event began with a presentation on STEM careers, introducing students to the wide range of opportunities available at Microsoft. Panelists shared their career journeys, highlighting the various pathways into technology roles, including non-traditional routes that do not require a STEM degree. Students were especially engaged during the panel discussion, where they asked thoughtful questions about what a typical workday looks like and the dynamics of a tech work environment.
A key highlight of the event was a small-group activity focused on interview skills. Students practiced responding to common interview questions and received personalized feedback from Microsoft professionals. Throughout the session, Panelists emphasized the importance of perseverance and self-confidence, encouraging students to apply themselves and explore opportunities even if they don’t follow a conventional STEM path. Students expressed appreciation for meeting professionals who were unapologetically themselves, reinforcing the message that authenticity is a strength in the workplace.
Educators noted that students left feeling motivated and inspired, having gained valuable insight into career development and the interview process. The workshop provided a meaningful opportunity for students to build confidence and understand the many ways they can break into the tech industry.
