Over 25 Years of Inspiration

IGNITE Founder & CEO, Cathi Rodgveller, with students participating in an IGNITE Program Event.

IGNITE Worldwide (IGNITE) has been lighting the path for girls and young women in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) fields for over two decades. Founded with a vision of inclusivity and empowerment, IGNITE has played a pivotal role in bridging the gender gap in STEM. IGNITE’s journey continues to unfold as a testament to our organization’s relentless commitment to fostering diversity, dismantling stereotypes, and nurturing the passions of young minds in STEM.

Inception of IGNITE Worldwide

IGNITE Worldwide came from Founder and CEO Cathi Rodgveller’s deep-rooted desire to create a space for girls to thrive and realize their own unique potential while addressing the underrepresentation of women in STEM careers. Its inception in 1999 marked the beginning of a mission aimed at creating opportunities for girls and women to explore the vast world of STEM and, in turn, change the landscape of STEM education and industries.

The Pioneering Spirit

In 1998, while working as the Career and Technical Education Equity Manager for Seattle Public Schools, Cathi Rodgveller recognized the unique challenges historically underrepresented students faced in accessing opportunities that lead to high-wage, high-demand careers in STEM fields. That realization sparked a vision that would launch a new initiative for Cathi as a leader and a mentor: to create a bridge for girls to learn about STEM pathways and connect directly with professional women role models in these fields.

She developed a mentorship program that would later become the basis of the IGNITE Program by utilizing a grant that would provide funding to help girls learn about high-wage, high-demand careers. The Carl Perkins Grant provided federal funding to improve both secondary and postsecondary career and technical education programs and included provisions that aim to promote better gender equity in roles we now include in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics).

It was the start of what we all know now as IGNITE Worldwide. IGNITE, which stands for “Inspiring Girls Now in Technology Evolution,” is built on the foundation of creating a shared experience amongst classmates during the school day, to inspire change and build confidence in girls and gender-diverse students. It is a way for women to share their stories with girls so they understand that women who went before them also had to navigate immense obstacles but never gave up on themselves.

Building Momentum

As the IGNITE Program gained traction in Seattle, other educators throughout the state of Washington expressed their desire to use it at their schools. The Program’s value transcended schools, school districts, cities, and regions—it was clear to see the change it was inspiring in the girls in and out of their classrooms.

Within a few years, the Program was awarded as a state and national best practice program by the Department of Education. The award was part of the Programs and Practices that Work: Preparing Students for Nontraditional Careers Project by the Association of Career and Technical Education (ACTE), the National Alliance for Partnerships in Equity (NAPE), National Association of State Directors of Career Technical Education Consortium (NASDCTEc), and the National Women’s Law Center (NWLC).

Receiving such high recognition inspired Cathi to take action to share the Program with more schools and districts throughout Washington. At the time, the technology and engineering fields were struggling to attract a workforce that reflected the populations they served. Rodgveller knew her Program could help change the trajectory and inspire girls to pursue the high-wage, high-demand jobs in need of diversity.

Taking the Leap

At the encouragement of her peers, mentors, and organizations such as NAPE, Cathi decided to embark on a new adventure as the founder of a nonprofit organization built to close the gender gap in STEM fields. By 2007, IGNITE Worldwide was established as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, and in 2016, Cathi left her position at Seattle Public Schools to focus her efforts solely on growing the organization.

From its earliest days, IGNITE Worldwide embodied the pioneering spirit of those who believed in its mission. With a team of passionate individuals at its core, the organization set out to make STEM fields more accessible to young girls and women. Their vision was clear: to inspire, educate, and empower future STEM leaders.

IGNITE Worldwide’s journey is defined by a series of impactful initiatives. Over the years, the organization has hosted countless events – including field trips, workshops, and panels. These initiatives have not only provided girls with hands-on experiences in STEM but have also connected them with inspiring role models who have broken barriers and defied stereotypes.

Shattering Stereotypes with Empowerment

For over 25 years, IGNITE Worldwide has been empowering girls and gender-diverse students. Through its work, our organization has ignited the aspirations of countless young minds. It has given them the tools, mentorship, and support to dream big and envision themselves as scientists, engineers, mathematicians, and technology leaders. The impact has rippled through generations, leaving a lasting legacy.

Central to IGNITE Worldwide’s mission is the unwavering belief that stereotypes about who can excel in STEM must be shattered. The organization’s efforts have focused on challenging traditional norms and creating an environment where gender, background, or socioeconomic status do not limit anyone’s potential to thrive in STEM. The IGNITE Program offers girls and gender-diverse students an opportunity to believe that they are capable of great things and that pursuing those things will change our world for the better.

Looking to the Future

As we trace the remarkable history of IGNITE Worldwide, we find a narrative of hope, empowerment, and change. The organization’s dedication to leveling the playing field in STEM education has profoundly impacted the lives of girls and women worldwide. IGNITE Worldwide continues to be a beacon of inspiration for those who believe in the power of diversity and inclusivity.

Our story reminds us that collectively, we can create a future where STEM knows no boundaries and all young minds can soar to their fullest potential. Join us in celebrating the journey of IGNITE Worldwide and the bright future it continues to ignite for the next generation of STEM leaders.
