What is IGNITE?

The IGNITE Program started more than 25 years ago in Seattle Public Schools, thanks to funding provided by the Carl D. Perkins Vocational and Technical Education Act, which focuses on gender equity programs that encourage underrepresented genders to enroll in CTE classes as a pathway to high-wage, high-demand careers.

IGNITE’s mission is to increase gender equity in STEM. IGNITE Events are specifically designed as a space for girls and gender-diverse students, those who are traditionally underrepresented in fields like technology, engineering, and skilled trades.

Our goal is for IGNITE Events to:

  • Spark interest in STEM.
  • Connect students with professionals they can relate to.
  • Provide a supportive environment to help students feel comfortable and gain confidence to explore STEM.
  • Encourage further exploration—including through classes and clubs at your school!
